    Introduction to JTATM: ITMA 2023, Special Issue 2 of 2 ITMA 2023 (19th show) was held in Milan, Italy, June 8-14. Despite the slowdown in the world economy impacted by the COVID-19 Pandemic, this ITMA show attracted 111,000 visitors from 143 countries with an exhibition space of 200,000 square meters that accommodated 1,709 exhibitors from 47 countries. The show has exceeded all expectations as the record was broken in terms of number of exhibitors since its inception in 1951. The technologies exhibited at ITMA 2023 show covered the entire textile manufacturing pipeline (from fiber formation to market) with focus on sustainability and digitization. This JTATM special issue 2 covers the most innovative technologies of conversion of fiber to yarns and fabrics, along with assessment and evaluation. These two issues cover a range of technologies that are of interest to scholars and industry professionals providing insights into digitization and sustainability.

    This special issue of JTATM (Part I of II) focuses on emerging issues in global supply chains for textiles and apparel. The articles selected for this issue consider a range of topics with potential short and long term impacts on the development, production, distribution and marketing of textiles & apparel. As such, this compilation of articles presents research generated through eclectic methods suited for description and exploration. The second part of this issue will be released in early fall 2021.

    The design thinking model teaches that empathy is the starting point in design, but there are many ways of establishing empathy, and many ways in which empathy influences subsequent steps in designing a product. These submissions use methodologies that are related to the design process, such as ethnography, storytelling, observational research and case studies. As well as, designed objects that are documented photographically or through video, and in writing.
