Abstract

Bleached Ananas comosus leaf fiber has been grafted using potassium persulphate (K2S2O8) as an initiator under the catalytic influence of ferrous sulphate (FeSO4.7H2O) in presence of air by AN monomer. The maximum graft level at optimum conditions, viz., monomer concentration, initiator concentration, catalyst concentration as well as reaction time, fiber amount and temperature have been determined. The percentage of grafting increases with the increase of monomer concentration, initiator concentration, catalyst concentration, fiber amount, time and temperature up to certain limits and thereafter it decreases. The optimum conditions of grafting for Acrylonitrile (AN) are 1.51 mol/liter monomer concentration, 0.005 mol/liter initiator concentration, 0.002 mol.L-1 catalyst concentration, 120 min. reaction time,0.1 gm fiber amount and 500C temperature. The maximum percentage of grafting and grafting efficiency at optimum condition was 70 %.
